Experiments on the Strength Properties of Reinforced-Concrete Beams." By WILLIAM CHARLES POPPLEWELL, M.Sc., Assoc. M. Inst. C.E. THE experiments here described were carried out in the Materials Testing Laboratory of the Manchester School of Technology. The object was to compare the behaviour, when tested to destruction, of a number of reinforced-concrete beams all of the same size, formed of the same materials, and supported and loaded in the same manner, the only variation being in the arrangement of the reinforcement. Tests were also made to investigate the validity of some of the assumptions usually made in calculations for reinforced concrete, The Specimens.-The building of the beams was simple. Suitable wooden forms were prepared, three in number, the bottom of each consisting of a strong continuous plank, the sides and ends being loose, with the tops left open. The sides were bolted together in such a manner as to grip the ends, and to prevent any outward sag they were further stayed a t frequent intervals by strong battens, carried higher than the sides themselves and bolted together.
