In this paper performance of heterodyne detection type coherent optical fiber communication systems for M-PSK signalling scheme has been investigated. Expressions for probability of error in presence of shot noise have been modified to include the effect of local oscillator (LO) excess noise, laser phase noise and time jitter. Power penalties have also been obtained in each case. It has been, found that degradation of system performance due to laser phase noise increases significantly as value of M increases. However, degradation due to LO excess noise and time jitter is almost same for all values of M.It has been shown that higher power LO source are preferable from LO excess noise point of view. It is found that the effect of laser phase noise is significantly degrading as M increases in M-PSK systems. The power penalty due to time jitter does not vary significantly with M.The receiver structure for heterodyne detection for BPSK transmission used in the following analysis is available in the literature [6]. For M-PSK systems only demodulator structure is different and is shown in Fig. 1 [12]. Performance of above receiver for M-PSK signalling scheme is evaluated in following sections.
Performance of M-PSK signalling schemeIn this section, analyses of binary and M-PSK signalling schemes in presence of shot noise have been carried out. Subsequently, the analysis is extended to include the effect of other impairments like, local oscillator (LO)
