Experiments and Simulations of Particle Flows in a Magnetized Dust Torus

Abstract: An overview is given of the confinement and dynamical phenomena observed in experiments and simulations of magnetized dust tori. Due to the presence of gravity, a strongly inhomogeneous velocity field is found along the circumference of the torus. The simulations show that the dust flow, which is unsheared and nearly incompressible, exhibits a distinct shell structure, which can be understood by rapid frictional cooling and strong Coulomb coupling. At lower frictional damping, the symmetry of the flow can be s… Show more

“…Open questions include the behavior of larger (but still finite) systems and their transition to bulk order in their central region or the role of particle interaction, e.g. Toroidal dust clouds forming ring-like shell structures along the torus [54] will provide further mutual insight into shell formation and particle flows. Moreover, the dynamics of crystallization from a liquid state as well as the influence of external electric or magnetic fields (on magnetic particles) will be studied and compared to theoretical predictions [53].…”

“…This attention is driven by experiments, which have only recently begun. There are at least three magnetized dusty plasma devices [41][42][43], which now, or soon will be, producing experimental data. The prospects for these experiments has motivated simulations, including [44][45][46][47], to study waves for 2D Yukawa liquids and solids under a magnetic field.…”

“…Such a behavior has been observed for dusty plasmas in DC and RF discharges. In anodic plasmas with horizontally oriented fields rotating dust tori have been produced and studied (Reichstein et al 2012;Pilch et al 2008;Wilms et al 2015;Piel and Wilms 2016;.…”
