Experiments and modeling of mechanism analysis of maize picking loss

Abstract: Maize picking is the main form of maize harvest in China. Maize picking loss accounts for a large proportion of the current maize harvest loss. An experimental study and a theoretical analysis were conducted to explore the influencing factors and rules of maize picking loss. First, the boundary conditions, established by analyzing the mechanism of maize picking, determined the influences of maize picking loss. Then, single-factor experiments and a central composite design (CCD) method were used to determine th… Show more

“…Because corn is harvested for the ears rather than the stalks, the corn stalks need to be pulled down by the stalk rolls after feeding. Therefore, the forces applied to the stalks on the corn header have a greater impact on corn harvesting ( Zhang et al, 2021 ). Theoretically, to improve the corn header’s ear picking adaptability for the reverse lodged corn, the velocity of pins on the gathering chains should be largely reduced to help with the lifting and feeding of stalks.…”

“…where L j is the ear height of corn plant, mm; L s is the height of the center line in front of snapping rolls above ground, mm; L g is the working length of snapping rolls, mm; α is the angle between snapping rolls and horizontal plane, ( • ). According to information collected and sorted from the mainly promoted breeding corn in the Huanghuaihai region of China, the height L j is 700~1100 mm, the height L s is 300~500 mm, and the angle α is 25~35 • when corns are harvested [19]. It can be seen from Equation (1) that the length of snapping rolls is 328~725 mm.…”

“…The quality of non-threshing kernels accounts for a percentage of the total quality of kernels after one plot has been harvested and threshing has been completed. The nonthreshing rate is calculated according to Equation (19), which is described as follows:…”

“…Corn harvester cutting table has been extensively investigated by domestic and foreign researchers because of their critical role in harvesting the crop. Based on a thorough examination of corn-picking mechanism boundary conditions, Zhang et al calculated the impact of picking loss [2]. The seed removal and cob removal models were established to determine the best combination of parameters for corn picking and harvesting.…”
