“…The pharmacological agents most commonly used in the early studies investigating the question of dual innervation were cocaine (Graves, 1926; Poos, 1928), epinephrine k e . adrenaline (Poos, 1928;Cogan, 1937;Meesmann, 1952;Siebeck, 1953;Biggs et al, 1959;Van Alphen, 1961)l and neosynephrine Le. phenylephrine (Heath, 1936 ; Biggs et al, 1959)l.…”

“…2 The iris and ciliary muscles, which are directly responsible for the manifest structural changes in pupillary response and accommodation respectively, receive autonomic innervations from both the mesencephalic Edinger-Westphal nucleus and hypothalamic center in the diencephalon. [3][4][5] Parasympathetic innervation of the iris sphincter muscle results in reduction of pupillary diameter, whereas sympathetic innervation of the iris dilator muscle increases pupil diameter. However, the accommodative state is largely controlled by parasympathetic innervation of the ciliary muscle, although sympathetic innervation plays a complementary role in relaxing accommodation.…”
