Experimental Transformation of Kaolinite to Halloysite

Abstract: Abstract--A well-characterized kaolinite has been hydrated in order to test the hypothesis that platey kaolinite will roll upon hydration. Kaolinite hydrates are prepared by repeated intercalation of kaolinite with potassium acetate and subsequent washing with water. On hydration, kaolinite plates roll along the major crystallographic directions to form tubes identical to proper tubular halloysite. Most tubes are elongated along the b crystallographic axis, while some are elongated along the a axis. Overall, t… Show more

“…Mixtures were prepared in cooperation with the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry AS CZ. Sample preparation was carried out by melt blending in a laboratory mixer Brabender W 50 EHT (chamber volume 50 cm 3 ) and a Brabender PLE 651 plastograph. Mixtures were blended at the temperature of 190°C (measured in the chamber of the mixer) with revolutions of 60 min -1 for 10 minutes.…”

“…The structure of HNT consist of a twisted layer of kaolinite, which is formed from one side of the tetrahedral Si-O groups and from the other side from octahedral Al-OH groups with a small amount of loosely-bound water located between layers, Fig. 1 [1,3,4]. This water content reduces an electrostatic interaction of adjacent layers, which causes the close-distance order and spiral setting of kaolinite.…”

“…The nanotubes possess mesopores inside the tubular structure and layered structure within the tubular wall, which can be regarded as a layered mesoporous hierarchical structure. Various layered oxides, such as titanate, 65) niobate, 66) zinc oxide, 67) tungsten oxide, 68) and kaolinite, 69) have been reported to be nanoscrolls. Although nanoscrolls are formed by hydrothermal reactions in many cases, limited examples of nanoscrolls (e.g., niobate nanoscroll 66) ) are formed from the corresponding nanosheets in a mild condition.…”
