Experimental Therapeutic Strategies in Epilepsies Using Anti-Seizure Medications

Abstract: Epilepsies are among the most common neurological problems. The disease burden in patients with epilepsy is significantly high, and epilepsy has a huge negative impact on patients’ quality of life with epilepsy and their families. Anti-seizure medications are the mainstay treatment in patients with epilepsy, and around 70% of patients will ultimately control with a combination of at least two appropriately selected anti-seizure medications. However, in one-third of patients, seizures are resistant to drugs, an… Show more

“…Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by abnormal CNSelectrical activity and recurrent seizures. Epilepsy affects 65 million people worldwide, mainly neonates and geriatrics , thus, representing a personal and community major burden [1][2][3]. About one-third of patients remain resistant to treatment despite substantial increase in the available antiepileptic drugs [4].…”

“…In many cases, antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) can partially control seizures and help patients to maintain their everyday lives. Although advanced in antiepileptic drugs and research, seizures occur in approximately 30% of patients with epilepsy (Rahim et al, 2021). In this manner, many factors have essential roles in the pathophysiology of epilepsy, and we must consider these, including in ammation, in the treatment of epilepsy.…”

“…Dictyostelium Research to Improve Our Understanding of the Cell and Developmental Mechanisms of MCFAs in Health and Disease Treatment D. discoideum has played a key role in research focused on identifying and characterizing the pleiotropic effects of MCFAs. This area of research was first initiated through studies on the short, branched chain fatty acid valproic acid (VPA; 2propylpentanoic acid), commonly used as a medicinal treatment for epilepsy and bipolar disorder (Fontana et al, 2020;Rahim et al, 2021). Surprisingly, the molecular mechanism of this drug has remained largely unclear (Terbach and Williams, 2009).…”
