Experimental Thalamic Focus and Thalamocortical Epileptogenic Mechanisms in the Brain of Turtle

Abstract: SUMMARY An experimental model of the thalamocortical (centrencephalic) component of seizure susceptibility was induced in 29 turtles. An, epileptic focus was elicited in thalamus by electrophoretic administration of penicillin. Thalamic discharges were projected to ipsilateral, sometimes also contralateral, sensory cortex of the forebrain. The thalamic focus increased the duration and frequency of cortical spindles and enhanced the activity of the cortical penicillin focus by shortening the latency of its orig… Show more

“…Furthermore, elegant studies provided a potential anatomic substrate linking the hyperventilation manoeuvre with autonomic nervous system overactivation in MTLE patients. In facts, in animals, air insufflation into the nasal cavities triggers discharges in experimentally created foci of forebrain structures (Servit and Strejckovà, 1973). In MTLE patients, nasal instead of oral HV is much more effective in activating epileptic discharges.…”
