Experimental taphonomy of fish - role of elevated pressure, salinity and pH

Abstract: Experiments are reported to reconstruct the taphonomic pathways of fish toward fossilisation. Acrylic glass autoclaves were designed that allow experiments to be carried out at elevated pressure up to 11 bar, corresponding to water depths of 110 m. Parameters controlled or monitored during decay reactions are pressure, salinity, proton activities (pH), electrochemical potentials (Eh), and bacterial populations. The most effective environmental parameters to delay or prevent putrefaction before a fish carcass i… Show more

“…Consequently, comparing data generated in different laboratories with widely differing analytical µCT setups can pose a problem (Cooper et al, 2007(Cooper et al, , 2016Bouxsein et al, 2010). In addition, µCT has thus far only rarely been used in experimental taphonomy (Schwermann et al, 2012;Le Garff et al, 2017;Gäb et al, 2020).…”

“…However, an advantage of CT techniques is their non-destructive approach, which allows studying rare or otherwise valuable samples. In addition, CT permits systematic and comparative studies on bone taphonomy before and after experiments, which so far for methodological reasons were based on limited structural and chemical investigations of experimentally altered samples (Blake et al, 1997;Blake et al, 1998;Zazzo et al, 2004;Schwermann et al, 2012;Kohn and Moses, 2013;Keenan and Engel, 2017;Aufort et al, 2019;Caruso et al, 2020;Gäb et al, 2020).…”

“…In modern soda lakes, anoxia can be induced by chemical or thermal stratification (Melack and MacIntyre, 2016). Soda conditions might also promote fossilization by slowing down the decomposition of a fish carcass by bacteria (Gäb et al, 2020). In general, excellent preservation is an indicator that fish specimens were fossilized in situ and have not been transported over a long distance after death.…”

“…Determining how animal fossils form and the ways in which their soft tissues are preserved in the geologic record has been a challenge to unravel because decay begins immediately after senescence while diagenetic alteration of organic matter continues over millions of years. Laboratory experiments running days to years provide important insights to some of the processes taking place (e.gAllison, 1986; Briggs & Kear, 1993; Butler et al, 2015; Darroch et al, 2012; Gäb et al, 2020; Gupta et al, 2009; Iniesto et al, 2013; McCoy et al, 2015b; Naimark et al, 2016; Sansom et al, 2011). However, fossilization is ultimately the consequence of compounding factors, and this complexity poses various challenges for laboratory and modeling studies (Briggs, 1995; Briggs & McMahon, 2016; Parry et al, 2018; Purnell et al, 2018; Sansom, 2014).…”
