Experimental study on the transition process from partial discharge to arc discharge of oil–paper insulation based on fibre‐optic sensors

Abstract: Arc discharge in the power transformer can bring enormous economic losses and safety risks. The transformer protection system for arc discharge faults is still not ideal. The physical characteristics of the whole process from partial discharge defects transition to arc faults are not fully recognized, mainly because it is difficult to establish and sense the relevant characteristic parameters. This paper built a research platform for studying the transition process from partial discharge to early arc discharge… Show more

“…This process continues until a significant part of the insulation structure is destroyed and can no longer tolerate the intensity of the electric field. At this stage, an arc is drawn between the two electrodes that this insulation is between them, and the equipment is destroyed [1,2].…”

“…The optical fiber sensor has the characteristics of anti-electromagnetic interference, electrical insulation, corrosion resistance, etc., and is suitable for the quantitative detection of characteristic parameters of Li-ion batteries [ 23 ]. The sensor based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) adopts wavelength modulation, is easy to use, and is not affected by intensity noise [ 24 , 25 , 26 ]. Several methods have been proposed for cell temperature and strain detection based on the fiber optic sensing technology [ 27 , 28 ].…”

“…Compared with traditional winding vibration sensors, optical fiber sensors have the characteristics of anti-electromagnetic interference and corrosion resistance, which are more suitable for application in transformer winding vibration detection. [15][16][17] Therefore, many researchers have also developed a variety of optical fiber sensors applied to transformer windings. Araújo et al used 3.2 mm diameter spiral cut PTFE winding tube wrapped fiber optics, made of nearly 3 m long casing, its flange with the wall of the transformer ARTICLE pubs.aip.org/aip/adv tight cross alignment, the end of the optical fiber made of multipoint Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) temperature probe to achieve the temperature of the transformer and internal vibration at the same time to detect, and get a more obvious effect, but the effect of vibration detection is susceptible to the influence of temperature.…”
