Experimental Study on the Partial Discharge Characteristics of Palm Oil and Coconut Oil Based Al2O3 Nanofluids in the Presence of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate

Abstract: This experimental study aims to examine the partial discharge (PD) properties of palm oil and coconut oil (CO) based aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanofluids with and without surfactants. The type of surfactant used in this study was sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The volume concentrations range of Al2O3 dispersed in oil samples was varied from 0.001% to 0.05%. The ratio of surfactants to nanoparticles was set to 1:2. In total, two different types of refined, bleached and deodorized palm oil (RBDPO) and one type of CO… Show more

“…The positive effect of nanoparticles on PD activity was described also in Ref. [ 13 ] where enhancement of PD inception voltage in natural ester (NE) due to the addition of Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles reached values up to 39.3 %. In another study by Sun et al [ 14 ], the PD inception voltage was enhanced by 13.4 % before and 23.8 % after accelerated ageing in mineral oil with TiO 2 nanoparticles.…”

“…This suggests that other important parameters need to be taken into account in this process. Indeed, using a surfactant, Mohamad et al 59 carried out a study on the impact of nanofluid stability on PDIV. Their work shows that nanofluids with greater stability have a much higher percentage increase in PDIV, and that the aggregation of nanoparticles in the liquid produces a drop in PDIV.…”

“…Furthermore, the efficiency of the combination of oil-paper insulation is evaluated with the non-destructive PD test. Beyond that, defining the PD activity in dielectric fluids is very important to retain suitable kinds of NPs inside the liquid insulation to suppress the PD activity and therefore delay the aging process of the oil [43,44] 6b). The test cell consists of two plate electrodes with the gap between them set at 0.75 mm.…”
