Experimental study on the effect of graphene nanoplatelets on the low‐velocity impact response of prestressed filament wound basalt‐based composite pressure vessels

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact behavior of composite pressure vessel (CPV) in-service case. Additionally, graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) were introduced to epoxy resin. [±55 ] 4 basalt/epoxy specimens were manufactured using the filament-winding method, and the low-velocity impact (LVI) response was investigated. The LVI tests of CPVs were performed at energy levels of 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 J under 50 bar internal pressure. The prestress value considering the internal pressure … Show more

“…Basalt fiber reinforcement (BFR) has become increasingly important in industrial applications due to its high chemical and thermal stability as well as its temperature resistance and electrical and sound insulation properties. It also shows good mechanical properties compared to its efficiency-oriented alternatives in the field of use [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. Due to these advantages, basalt fiber-reinforced composites are used for insulation purposes in some applications [ 6 ], and there are studies on their use in automotive components as well [ 7 ].…”

“…Due to their inexpensive, low density, excellent fatigue properties and high toughness, composite high-pressure vessels and pipelines have been widely used in the power industry, emergency services and in the automotive industry. [1][2][3] They are majorly applied in gaseous fuel storage, including methane, hydrogen or their blends. Hydrogen, which is used mainly in high-pressure gaseous hydrogen storage of fuel cells, has become the most mature vehicle-mounted hydrogen storage method due to its low cost, technical simplicity and high reliability.…”

“…It has been seen from the literature that composite materials are frequently used in high-pressure fluid storage tanks and transportation systems, and many scientific studies have been carried out to improve mechanical properties. [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] It has been clearly seen that metal or polymer liners in the storage tanks are wrapped with composite materials, and these structures provide significant advantages due to their lightness and higher strength. These structures, which are preferred in many different areas from the oxygen storage systems for the aircrafts to the fuel storage tanks of public transportation vehicles, offer high corrosion resistance, long service life, and less maintenance cost.…”
