This work investigates a solar combined heat and power systems based on hybrid photovoltaic-thermal heat pump systems for the simultaneous provision of space heating and electricity to residential homes. The analysed system connects a photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) panel, through a PVT water tank, to a heat pump. The study is based on quasi-steady state heat transfer and thermodynamic analysis that takes incremental time steps to solve for the fluids temperature changes from the heat pump and the solar PVT panels. The effects of solar irradiance, size of the water tank and the water flow rate in the PVT pipes (laminar and turbulent) on the performance of the system are analysed. Particular focus is made towards the efficiency (electrical and thermal) of the PVT and the COP of the heat pump. Results show that the minimum COP of the heat pump is 4.2, showing the high performance of the proposed hybrid system. Increasing the water flowrate through the PVT panel from 3L/min (laminar) to 17L/min (turbulent) increases the PVT's total efficiency (electrical + thermal) from 61% to 64.5%. Increasing the size of the PVT water tank from 1L to 100L, increases the total efficiency of the PVT panel by 6.5%.

Solar photovoltaic/thermal technology has been widely utilized in building service area as it generates thermal and electrical energy simultaneously. In order to improve the photovoltaic/thermal system performance, nanofluids are employed as the thermal fluid owing to its high thermal conductivity. This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art of the photovoltaic/thermal systems with different loop-pipe configurations (including heat pipe, vacuum tube, roll-bond, heat exchanger, micro-channel, U-tube, triangular tube and heat mat) and nanoparticles (including Copper-oxide, Aluminium-oxide, Silicon carbide, Tribute, Magnesium-oxide, Cerium-oxide, Tungsten-oxide, Titanium-oxide, Zirconia-oxide, Graphene and Carbon). The influences of the critical parameters like nanoparticle optical and thermal properties, volume fraction, mass flux and mass flow rates, on the photovoltaic/thermal system performance are for the optimum energy efficiency. Furthermore, the structure and manufacturing of solar cells, micro-thermometry analysis of solar cells and recycling process of photovoltaic panels are explored. At the end, the standpoints, recommendations and potential future development on the solar photovoltaic/thermal system with various configurations and nanofluids are deliberated to overcome the barriers and challenges for the practical application. This study demonstrates that the advanced photovoltaic/thermal configuration could improve the system energy efficiency approximately 15%–30% in comparison with the conventional type whereas the nanofluid is able to boost the efficiency around 10%–20% compared to that with traditional working fluid.

The hybrid photovoltaic-thermal system has shown great progress. Electrical energy is produced from PV panels while thermal energy is produced via a working fluid carried through the panels. In this paper, the vertical PV/T is introduced using working fluids such as air and liquid, which serve to control the excess temperature of the PV panels as well as to collect heat to be made available as thermal energy. Installations of PV/T systems on building façades, as well as integration with other technologies such as heat pipe and heat pump are also discussed. Current studies of such building integration technologies are also explored, including the scale of application. This study aims to provide constructive information which can be used in future development of building facades for large-scale applications, to contribute to future sustainable development. Practical application: This study helps researchers and engineers who are considering photovoltaic thermal systems for building façades to have better understanding of its effect on electrical and thermal energy – for space heating, fresh air supply and hot water supply – using an active building envelope.
