Experimental study on the bearing capacity of PZ shape composite dowel shear connectors with elliptical holes

Abstract: The push-out test was carried out in order to study the shear performance of perfobond ribs (PBL) and puzzle (PZ) shape composite dowel shear connectors which are used in corrugated steel–concrete composite bridge decks. By considering the influencing factors of transversal reinforcement, elliptical holes and bonding friction forces, eight specimens were designed and prepared. The load–slip curves were obtained, and the static mechanical properties, including bearing capacity, slip, shear stiffness, and ductil… Show more

“…Commonly utilized connector materials include metals (e.g., stainless steel) and non-metallic materials (e.g., fiber-reinforced materials) 7 , 8 . Metal connectors offer excellent shear resistance, fire resistance, ductility, and affordability 9 . Metal connectors are a viable option when corrosion resistance and wall insulation performance are not primary concerns 10 , 11 .…”

“…Nowadays, the shear performance formula of PBL shear connectors, considering different parameters, was summarized in myriad literature (Zhang et al, 2013). As an illustration, based on the theory of elastic foundation beam, the formulas for calculating the shear stiffness and bearing capacity of the PBL connector were proposed by fully taking into account the number and diameter of holes, penetration plate thickness, concrete strength, the end bearing mode, the friction between the holes and the bond, the penetration bar diameter, and the transverse reinforcement, (Yang and Chen, 2018; Huang et al, 2022). Furthermore, the shear capacity formulas of PBL connectors were evaluated by comparing the slip behavior, shear capacity, and failure modes of PBL connectors with long and round holes (Zheng et al, 2016).…”
