Experimental study on antinociceptive and anti-allergy effects of patchouli oil

Abstract: Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. (Lamiaceae), which is named 'Guang-Huo-Xiang' in Chinese, has various therapeutic functions to remove dampness, relieve summer-heat and exterior syndrome, stop vomiting, and stimulate appetite. Patchouli oil is the essential oil of Pogostemonis herba. This study is aimed to investigate the antinociceptive and anti-allergy activities of patchouli oil. The antinociceptive activity of patchouli oil (20, 40, and 80 mg/kg) was evaluated using the acetic acid-induced writhing test (… Show more

“…Patchouli is a traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal symptoms. PEO and its derived compounds PA, PO, and β-PAE are the main active ingredients of patchouli that possess anti-inflammation, anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anti-allergy, and anti-cancer effects based on the cellular and animal studies (Li et al, 2011; He et al, 2013; Jeong et al, 2013; Dechayont et al, 2017). It is our interest to investigate whether the commensal GM plays a role in the health benefits of patchouli.…”

“…Xinxiang granule (XXG) is prepared from Biond magnolia flowers ( Magnolia biondii ), patchouli herb and small centipeda herb ( Centipeda minima ) and is used to treat allergic rhinitis and passive skin irritability [108]. Recently, the potential uses of patchouli oil for its antinociceptive and anti-allergic activities were confirmed in mouse models [109].…”

“…And most of the identified compounds in YJH sample including chlorogenic acid, galuteolin, linarin, luteolin, apigenin, patchoulol alcohol, pogostone, germacrone, curdione, and furanodiene have been reported to exhibit significant inflammatory effects [ 18 , 28 , 30 33 , 48 ]. Most importantly, our previous researches revealed that patchouli alcohol, the largest ingredient of YJH, had remarkable anti-inflammatory activity and would protect mice against the lung injury in mice of viral infection and influenza model [ 18 , 21 23 , 25 27 , 33 , 48 ]. Thus, the chemical analysis of YJH suggested that these major components are possibly responsible for the regulation of inflammatory factors against inflammation response in LPS induced ALI.…”

“…It has been reported to have antioxidant, antinociceptive, antiallergy, antibacterial, and antirespiratory virus actions [ 26 – 29 ]. The chemistry profiles of PO indicated that patchoulol alcohol and pogostone are the two most components in it [ 27 , 28 ]. Previous studied also demonstrated that patchouli alcohol could significantly prevent LPS-induced ALI in mice [ 30 33 ].…”
