Experimental study on a solar air heater with various perforated covers

Abstract: In this study, the thermal performances of single-and counter-flow solar air heaters with a normal cover and with quarter-and half-perforated covers were investigated experimentally. In this work, on two of the perforated covers, the holes were made in the first quarter at the top side of the covers. As for the other two covers, half of the cover area on the top side was perforated. The hole diameter, D, was 0.3 cm. The holes in the covers had a centre-to-centre distance of 20D (6 cm) or 10D (3 cm). It was fou… Show more

“…During the experiments, the following measurements were carried out on daily basis: global flux received by the flat plate solar collector, total daily irradiation, ambient temperature and temperatures in various points of the three configurations of the system studied. These basic physical parameters are reported in order to determine and compare the thermal performance of the (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) three configurations of the flat plate solar collector. Figure 3 shows that the ambient temperature (Tam) and the instantaneous solar flux increase gradually to reach a maximum value before decreasing.…”

“…Aldabbagh et al [21] investigated a single-pass solar air heater with 10 wire mesh layers in a channel with a high of 10 cm, and the maximum value of ∆T obtained was 27 °C at air mass flow rate of 0.012 kg/s. Nowzari and Aldabbagh [6] investigated a counter-flow collector with a normal plexiglas cover, and the maximum value of ∆T obtained was 34.8 °C at air mass flow rate of 0.011 kg/s. Figure 7 illustrates the variation of the thermal efficiency with the time for the three configurations of the flat plate solar collector.…”

“…Each mesh layer was painted in a black color to increase absorptivity. The wire meshes used in this collector were similar to the ones used by other researchers [12,15,16].…”

“…V-ribs arranged in transverse direction which were tested recently showed outstanding performance and in future these V-rib arrays could be arranged inclined the direction. RahelehNowzari and L B Y Aldabbagh [5]stated that the distance between the lower glass and the absorber in double pass solar air pre-heater should be 5.5cm. The results proved that conventional air pre heater is less efficient then baffled solar heater.…”
