Decision-Making Based on Multi-Dimensional Quality Control for Bridges

Quality control (QC) may be applied as a framework for maintenance planning when assigning different intervention measures to single structural elements or systems. This work proposes a reliability-based maintenance decision-making process for planning visual inspections on bridges based on the value of information and prior inspection data, and also promotes updating and improvement cycles for subsequent planning. To that aim, an integration between SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) data with a multidisciplinary approach is proposed to obtain a reliability index attending to QC. The data analysis was mainly carried out with respect to an existing measurement database and structural assessments, which were combined to obtain weighted importance coefficients for each component according to their significance in the structure. The Iranian railway network has a built stock of nearly 28,200 bridges from which a database obtained from 104 bridges was studied in this work, considering the data obtained from technical identification checklists. The results were then calibrated and validated with a dataset of seven bridges, which were inspected onsite. The inspection comprised the identification and grading of damages and defects on each element. Observed defects were considered as input for the risk analysis of each component of the network by considering the probability of detection, occurrence and its likely consequences. Decision making with inspection and intervention costs optimization was then performed, for a specific case study, using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) together with the value of information (VOI) for data filtering. With this approach, several parameters with lower values reduced from inspection and other valuable data remain for bridge quality assessment with optimum maintenance cost.

Influence of Variatropy on the Evaluation of Strength Properties and Structure Formation of Concrete under Freeze-Thaw Cycles

The resistance of concrete structures to the impact of cyclic freezing and thawing is one of the key long-term characteristics, which further determines the operation and its service life. To date, the resistance to alternating freeze-thawing cycles under various operating conditions of concrete structures has been little studied related to several manufacturing processes: simple vibrated, variotropic centrifuged, and improved variotropic vibrocentrifuged. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of heavy concrete manufacturing technology on the resistance of concrete to alternate freezing and thawing in an aggressive environment of 5% sodium chloride solution, as well as to study the trend in strength characteristics and weight loss of vibrated, centrifuged and vibrocentrifuged concretes after a series of freezing and thawing cycles. Standardized techniques for assessing the characteristics of concrete and scanning electron microscopy were used. Vibrated, centrifuged, and vibrocentrifuged concretes made from the same raw materials have differences in weight loss of 4.5%, 3%, and 2%, respectively, and in strength of 15.0%, 13.5%, and 10%, respectively, when tested for frost resistance in similar environments after 15 cycles by the accelerated method. Centrifuged and especially vibrocentrifuged variotropic concrete have greater resistance and endurance to cycles of alternate freezing and thawing compared to vibrated.

A Review of Durability Issues of Reinforced Concrete Structures Due to Coastal Soda Residue Soil in China

Soda residue soil (SRS) is a man-made engineering foundation soil formed by soda residue; it is mainly distributed in coastal areas in China. SRS is rich in a variety of corrosive salts, among which the concentrations of chloride ions are about 2–3 times that of seawater. These highly concentrated chloride ions migrate and diffuse in reinforced concrete (RC) structures built on coastal SRS through multiple transport mechanisms. However, current research on the durability of RC structures exposed to the coastal SRS environment has not led to the publication of any reports in the literature. SRS may be classified by analyzing the quantitative relationships among the corrosive ions it contains. In this paper, the deterioration of RC structures due to the corrosive saline-soil environment in China is discussed, and advances in RC structure durability under such circumstances are reviewed. Our findings show that a corrosive environment, especially when this is a result of coastal SRS, has a significant influence on the deterioration of RC structures, greatly threatening such buildings. A series of effective measures for enhancing the durability of RC structures in saline soil, including improvements in concrete strength, reductions in the water–binder ratio, the addition of mineral admixtures and fiber-reinforcing agents, etc., could provide a vital foundation for enhancing the durability of RC structures which are at risk due to coastal SRS. Vital issues that must be investigated regarding the durability of RC structures are proposed, including the transport mechanism and a prediction model of corrosive ions, dominated by chloride ions (Cl−), in SRS and RC structures, the deterioration mechanism of RC materials, a long-term performance deduction process of RC components, durability design theory, and effective performance enhancement measures. The findings of this paper provide some clear exploration directions for the development of basic theories regarding RC structure durability in coastal SRS environments and go some way to making up for the research gap regarding RC structure durability under corrosive soil environments.
