Experimental Study on a Novel Axial Separator for Oil–Water Separation

Abstract: In order to ease the pressure on oil price, the downhole oil−water separation system has been adopted to preseparate the output production. However, both the gravity separator and the conventional hydrocyclone in this system have some restrictions, which hinder their widespread application. Therefore, it is necessary to innovate and improve the performance of the oil−water separation device. This paper presents a novel axial separator for oil−water separation based on analysis of droplet trajectory, and an exp… Show more

“…Campen 29 similar swirler with Delft cyclone is used in the axial separator, while the light-phase outlet is placed downstream 5 Liu 30 the body of this separator is similar to the conventional separator, while the curved blades serve as a swirler to establish swirling flow 6 Hamza 31 similar structure with the one proposed by Van Campen, but a conical tube is used in the swirl chamber 7 Kou 33 similar structure with separator investigated by Hamza, but the outlet for the light phase is placed inside the guide vanes The details of the settling tanks can be found in our other work. 35 The oil is fully settled and reused after passing through the separator to ensure the stability of the inlet mixture. Besides, the data in the experiments was collected by a data acquisition system.…”

“…This is mainly because the increase of the inlet velocity led to the increase of tangential velocity of the two-phase vapor in the swirl chamber. The centrifugal force of tar vapor was further increased, and more tar vapor was thrown to the outside of the swirl, and then flowed, attached to the wall [33].…”

“…To run the oil and gas industry, different expertise areas are involved. , For example, studies related to drilling, completion, hydraulic fracturing, , enhanced oil recovery, , acidizing, organic deposition inhibition, inorganic deposition inhibition, , and the demulsification process are relevant to optimize the oil production. Nevertheless, the quality of water that is discarded or reinjected plays an important role not only in the oil business as a whole but also in the issues related to environmental aspects. Moreover, the treatment of oil-spilled seawater is a challenge around the world, adding motivation to the research on oil–water separation. …”
