The accuracy of outdoor performance of a photovoltaic (PV) array can be improved by considering the spectral effects. In this paper, the impact of seasonal spectral variations on the three different silicon PV technologies: single junction amorphous silicon (a-Si), Heterojunction with Intrinsic Thin-layer (HIT) and multi crystalline silicon (mc-Si) has been presented first time in Indian environmental conditions. The spectral effect on HIT PV module technology has been presented first time along with the first simultaneous study of variation in spectral indicators by useful fraction (UF), average photon energy (APE) and spectral mismatch factor (MMF), based on monthly and seasonal data. The maximum observed variation in UF was 26.4, 8.2, 10.8 %, while in MMF, variation was up to 24.7, 7.6, 8.2 % for a-Si, HIT and mcSi, respectively, and in APE variation was up to 15.3 %. Among all three technology modules, first time reported HIT technology showed the least variation while maximum variation was observed in a-Si technology. The observed spectral effect variations have been discussed on Performance Ratio and compared with reported results of other global sites. The value and trends of spectral parameters are important to understand the effect of spectral variation on different technology. This study is especially important in Indian subcontinent perspective because of the strong monsoon season, where observed variation in the spectrum-related parameter found to be highest among all the seasons.

The Influence of Operation Temperature and Variations of the Illumination on the Performance of Integrated Photoelectrochemical Water‐Splitting Devices

Renewable and storable fuel hydrogen can be produced through light‐driven water splitting using photovoltaic‐biased electrosynthetic (PV‐EC) devices. The required voltage to drive the reaction is approximately 1.5 V, which can be provided using multi‐junction silicon solar cells. To generate these voltages at the operation point, the solar cells are electrically optimized with respect to the standard test conditions. However, if such devices were to be used outdoors, a wide range of different illumination conditions has to be considered. Herein, we discuss the dependence of the solar‐to‐hydrogen efficiency on the spectral quality, the incident illumination intensity and the operation temperature. It is found that in the case of high irradiation intensities (e. g. 1 sun), high operation temperatures reduce the PV performance, but the overall PV‐EC device performance remains almost unchanged due to improved kinetics in the EC part. In contrast, when the illumination intensity is reduced, the loss in PV performance cannot be compensated by improved EC performances due to higher temperatures.

The operating characteristics of a commercial monocrystalline and amorphous Sisolar cell for outdoor and indoor applications with and without the use of the water flow lens (WFL) system are explored and reported. The cells are tested in indoor conditions with halogen and tungsten lamps, and additionally, in outdoor sun radiation.Changes in the spectra, investigation of the influence of higher and lower lighting, and indirect cooling of the solar cell are possibilities in the application of the used WFL system. After achieving the highest level of development and improvement for the Si-solar cell, as well as approaching theoretical maximum efficiency, it is obvious that efficiency gains can be made by better understanding additional light effects.
