Experimental Study of the Planting Uniformity of Sugarcane Single-Bud Billet Planters

Abstract: Planting uniformity is a key evaluation index for planters. This paper investigated the effect of rotational speed, the angle of the rake bar chain, and the number of billets on the planting uniformity of a seed-metering device in the laboratory. The experimental results showed that the optimal planting uniformity can be achieved under a rake bar chain angle of 117°, a number of billets of 500, and a rotational speed of the rake bar chain of 70 rpm. Under this condition, the quality index Zq was 97.22% and the… Show more

“…Planting uniformity of sugarcane is a key evaluation index for planters 5 and the cultivation by seedlings aims to save water, use fewer fertilizers, and raise the productivity of feddan in order to achieve a large income for the farms as well as a significant increase in sugarcane production, reaching 1.4 million tons of sugar annually within 3–5 years. The absence of a system for approving the seeds used in agriculture and ensuring their quality and that they are free from pests and diseases caused a decrease in the rates of germination of buds, which led to a decrease in plant density and the spread of pests and diseases, and thus a decrease in productivity.…”

“…It results in a quickly and consistently emerging plant stand at the desired plant density. However, it takes a lot of time and work [6][7][8]. Mechanized field planting has become more popular in the sugarcane industry as a solution to labor shortages and expensive production [9].…”

“…It greatly saves labor in the working process, and operates extended hours during both day and night shifts [11]. At this time, the three primary types of sugarcane planter are whole-stalk planters, real-time planters, and billet planters [6]. In addition to other industrialized countries, the United States, Japan, and Italy, among others, have begun to investigate sugarcane transplanting and have created automatic transplanter machinery suitable for diverse geographical environments and crop varieties [12][13][14][15].…”
