Summary Large‐scale power units are heavily influencing the regulation of electrical network frequency. Therefore, increasing their efficiency is an important issue. The elevated temperature and pressure of steam affect technical and economic characteristics. Based on the results of previous research, two competitive technical solutions have been evaluated for ultra‐supercritical steam parameters: moderate ‐ with a temperature of 700°C, a pressure of 23.5 MPa and “extreme” with the same temperature, and a pressure of 35 MPa. On the basis of the generalization of the existing data the optimistic, average, and pessimistic specific costs of steam turbine installation reconstruction on ultra‐supercritical steam parameters and capital costs were determined. The costs of operating the reconstructed power units are calculated, as well as, depending on the cost of coal, electricity the possible annual income from the electricity sale in Ukraine. The results of feasibility studies of the prospects for the reconstruction of 300 MW power units on ultra‐supercritical steam parameters cast doubt on the economic feasibility of implementing the project for the reconstruction of the unit for a steam temperature of 700°C, a pressure of 35 MPa at current prices for high‐temperature steel structures, coal, and electricity.
