Experimental Study of Strengthening an RC Bridge Deck by Adding a Concrete Overlay

Abstract: The present contribution focuses on the experimental investigation of moisture distribution profiles of a reinforced concrete bridge deck determined before, during and after adding a concrete overlay. By means of a non-destructive system, the mass water content distributions were measured in the existing bridge deck as well as in the concrete overlay. Furthermore, the in situ measurements were accompanied by a comprehensive laboratory test programme. Water desorption isotherms and ultimate drying shrinkage str… Show more

“…These recommendations focus on limiting moisture losses in properly designed concrete mixes. The most accepted way to do it is to cure concrete carefully, especially in structures with high surface‐to‐volume ratio, rather than using methods, which only prevent moisture loss, as protecting from wind or sunshine by plastic sheeting, monomolecular films, windbreaks and/or shades . Also, revibration and refinishing of the fresh concrete tends to close early shrinkage cracking, because of the destruction of the growing tensile stress and the fill of cavities under horizontal reinforcing bars.…”

“…As is well known and has been confirmed by the experimental investigations, [56,57,66] due to the low permeability of concrete, moisture migration in the specimen and moisture transfer to the environment are extremely slow processes. For instance, according to Bažant [70] moisture equilibrium in a specimen of 25 mm of thickness will be reached after about 2 years of drying from 100% ambient relative humidity to 50%.…”

“…The measuring accuracy of the MRS is about 0.30%. In addition, measurements of mass water contents by MRSs were conducted by the authors and described in previous papers, [56,57] dealing with the evaluation of the effects of drying shrinkage on the behaviour of concrete structures strengthened by overlays, where more details concerning nondestructive measurements with MRSs are provided.…”
