Experimental study of recycled asphalt mixtures with high percentages of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP)

Abstract: This paper presents an experimental study to characterize the mechanical behaviour of bituminous mixtures containing high rates of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Two semidense mixtures of 12 and 20 mm maximum aggregate size and containing 40 and 60% RAP, respectively (S-12 and S-20, in accordance with Spanish specifications), which were used for rehabilitation of a highway section, were evaluated. First, the effect of RAP variability on the recycled mixtures was analyzed. Their mechanical properties were th… Show more

“…Although RAP was derived always from the same stockpile obtained from the cold milling the same pavement, RAP Management (fractionating, stockpile management practices, etc. ), material heterogeneity (RAP Asphalt Content & Gradation) and other sources of variations caused RAP variability [23][24][25][26][27][28]. Despite this, it is noted that due to the use of a very high percentage of RAP, experiments demonstrate that the solutions proposed meet a number of sustainability requirements [29][30][31].…”

“…Thus, rates higher than 50% were used in binder and base courses along the Fenix Project (Valdés, Martínez, & Pérez-Jiménez, 2008). The results obtained led to the conclusion that both the Marshall stability and granulometric variability tend to grow as new RAP is incorporated.…”
