Experimental Study of Magnetorheological Elastomer Vibration Isolator

Abstract: The magnetorheological elastomer has a broader potential application due to overcoming the settlement, poor stability, sealing problems and other shortcomings of magnetorheological fluid easily. Firstly the magnetorheological elastomer is prepared, and then it is experimentally proved that the magnetic effect of magneto-rheological elastomers is occurred under magnet field and the stiffness can be also adjusted by controlling the density of field through performance experiments. In this paper, a squeeze mode m… Show more

“…Although research and development in MRE materials themselves have been proceeding in recent years, research on MRE applications, especially MRE device development and implementation, is very limited. Research reported on new MRE devices is mainly limited to mechanical engineering, such as vibration absorbers [29][30][31][32][33][34] and vibration isolators [35][36][37]. For example, Ginder and coworkers [32] piloted a theoretical work by utilizing MREs as variable-spring-rate elements to develop an adaptive tuned vibration absorber.…”

“…The design and implementation of large MRE-based devices have yet to be reported, due to challenge in providing a sufficient magnetic field for large/thick/laminated MRE compounds. By far the largest MRE sample found in the literature is 45 mm × 20 mm [37]. Of all the above research [29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37], the device designs in terms of the coil placement, in which the MRE was placed outside of the coil, are not optimal and have yet to be improved.…”

“…Due to its high efficiency and facility, the development of an MRE-based isolator has become a pressing need, which is why a great deal of effort has been expended on investigating and developing a highly adjustable MRE isolator [17,18]. Hwang et al [19] conducted a conceptual study on the use of an MRE on a base isolation system for building structures.…”
