Experimental Study of Antiatherosclerosis Effects with Hederagenin in Rats

Abstract: The research tries to establish Wistar rat's model of atherosclerosis for evaluating the antiatherosclerotic effect of hederagenin and exploring its antiatherosclerosis-related mechanisms. The statistical data have shown that hederagenin exhibits multiple pharmacological activities in the treatment of hyperlipidemia, antiplatelet aggregation, liver protection, and anti-inflammation, indicating that hederagenin may exert a protective effect on vascular walls by improving lipid metabolism disorders and lipid dep… Show more

“…Hederagenin ( He , 3b,23-dihydroxyurs-12-ene-28-oic acid; Figure 1 ) is a member of the pentacyclic triterpenoid family, which is extracted mainly from the medicinal plant ivy ( Hedera helix L.) and Dipsacus asper [ 12 , 13 ]. A variety of pharmacological activities were ascribed to He , such as anticancer [ 14 ], anti-inflammatory [ 15 ], neuroprotective [ 16 ], and antiatherosclerosis effects [ 17 ]. Notably, He exhibits potential antitumor activity in several cancer cell lines.…”

“…Hederagenin is a triterpenoid isolated from the plant Hedera Helix (also known as the common Ivy). Recently, hederagenin was reported to exert anti-cancer 12 , antiinflammatory 13 , anti-atherosclerosis 14 , and anti-depression 15 activities in vitro and in vivo. In the present study, the effects of hederagenin on autophagy was investigated in the lung cancer cells.…”

“…Hederagenin (HE), a triterpenoid which is the aglycone part of numerous saponins isolated from ivy ( Hedera helix Linné ) leaves, has been reported to have anti-tumour, anti-apoptosis, and anti-inflammatory effects ( Zhang et al, 2012 ; Lu et al, 2015 ). Apoptosis and inflammation are both key molecular pathways involved in cerebral ischaemia/reperfusion (CI/R) injury.…”
