Ground fissures pose serious hazards to underground, as well as aboveground, structures. In underground railways, which are near ground fissures, the potential for disasters is even higher since tunnels face threats from fissure activities. To determine the interaction between a tunnel and ground fissure in the event of an earthquake, field surveys and data analysis were applied to study the activity and damage caused by the fissure. Shaking table tests and a numerical simulation model were used to understand the dynamic response of the fissure site and tunnel. The fissure site had a clear hanging wall effect, where the acceleration amplification was larger in the hanging wall than that in the footwall both on the surface and at the middle of the fissure site. The zone of influence was also wider in the hanging wall. The acceleration magnification factor increased with the burial depth and peak acceleration of the input earthquake. The peak ground acceleration (PGA) decreased with the burial depth on both sides of the fissure. The greatest PGA coefficient was obtained at the surface of the site. The vertical soil pressure was influenced by the metro tunnel and fissure. The vertical soil pressure was larger in the hanging wall, especially in the zone near the fissure, but was less near the tunnel. The horizontal soil pressure above the tunnel was less than that near the fissure. The results of this study are essential for the safe design of underground railway systems.

A series of shaking table tests on a scaled model were conducted to investigate the effect of steel braces on reinforced concrete frame structure across earth fissure under earthquake. In the test, a 1/15 scaled model structure taking into account soil-structure interaction was designed on the basis of similarity theorem. Seismic response data, including acceleration responses, displacement responses, shear force distributions, and strain amplitudes of column reinforcement were obtained and analyzed by comparing the results of unbraced and braced structure. Results show that with the peak ground acceleration of input motions increased, maximum of inter-story drifts, shear forces, and strain amplitudes increased, whereas the acceleration amplification factors decreased. Steel braces could obviously reduce the seismic response of the structure, indicating that this retrofit method is an effective control measure for structures across the earth fissure under earthquake. These results are significant for studying the effect of earth fissure on seismic responses of structures.

The circumferential joint of a shield tunnel is prone to damage under strong earthquakes, affecting the safety of the tunnel. This paper adopts an innovative shape memory alloy (SMA) flexible circumferential joint for longitudinal seismic mitigation of the tunnel. The SMA joint is composed of SMA ring springs and ordinary bolts. The SMA joint design is performed for a shield tunnel, and a simplified model of the SMA joint is proposed. Based on the generalised response displacement method, the longitudinal seismic mitigation analysis of the tunnel is conducted, the arrangement of SMA joints is discussed, and the seismic mitigation performance is evaluated. Results show that the SMA joint design method can efficiently complete the joint design, and the SMA joint model can accurately reflect the joint performance. SMA joints can reduce the stiffness of tunnel joints and have a good energy dissipation effect, which is suitable for shield tunnel seismic mitigation. An appropriate SMA joint arrangement can concentrate the tunnel joint deformation and effectively reduce the opening width between the tunnel segment rings. It can also dissipate energy and reduce the internal force of the tunnel joint, thus enhancing the seismic safety of the tunnel.
