Experimental Study and Numerical Simulation of Gas–Liquid Two-Phase Flow in Aeration Tank Based on CFD-PBM Coupled Model

Abstract: Gas–liquid two-phase flow directly determines the efficiency and stability of the aeration tank. In this paper, a gas–liquid two-phase testbed is built to explore the aeration performance and internal flow in an aeration tank, including an inverted-umbrella impeller (immersion depth of 0 mm, rotational speed of 250 r/min). Also, the running process is simulated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with a population balance model (PBM), and mass transfer coefficient is compared to the experiment. The experimen… Show more

“…In the traditional liquid-liquid extraction, the organic phase and aqueous phase are layered up and down by using the difference of their density, but others pointed out through theoretical derivation and experimental observation that in the micron channel, the gravity effect caused by the difference of relative surface tension and density between the two phases can be ignored [ 14 ]. The theoretical derivation is as follows:…”

“…Zhang [13] used single-factor analysis and orthogonal test methods to find the optimal working conditions of the aerator. Guo [14] mainly used the PBM model to simulate the aeration process, which has high accuracy for a gas-liquid two-phase flow. Liu [15] obtained the real-time flow streamline of the inverted umbrella aerator, using a simulated gas-liquid flow.…”

“…(7). e population balance model (PBM) is used to describe the size distribution of the dispersed phase in the simulation, and the bubble diameter and proportion are determined by high-speed photography experimental results (Dong et al, 2020). e Luo-model, which considers bubble coalescence and fragmentation, is coupled (Zhang et al, 2018).…”
