Experimental study and finite element analysis on the joining performance of GF/PP rivets

Abstract: To improve the performance of thermoplastic composite joints and reduce the weight of joints, glass fiber (GF)/polypropylene (PP) thermoplastic composite rivets (GF/PP rivets) were prepared and tensile test and simulation analysis of GF/PP-riveted single-lap joints were carried out. Based on the tensile test, the optimum extension length of GF/PP rod with different diameters was determined by taking the specific joint strength (the ratio of joint strength to the weight of fasteners) as the evaluation index. Th… Show more

“…In terms of composite bolted connections, Mccarthy et al 7,8 established the finite element calculation model of composite material convex head bolt connection, and discussed the influence of bolt gap on the connection structure.Wang et al 9 prepared glass fiber (GF)/polypropylene (PP) thermoplastic composite rivets (GF/PP rivets), which improved the performance of thermoplastic composite joints and reduced the joint weight. Minnetyan et al 10 evaluated the structural durability, damage tolerance, and progressive fracture characteristics of bolted graphite/epoxy composite laminates through computational simulations.…”

“…Composite components are divided into numerous parts as per the requirements of structural design, manufacture, and maintenance of composites, as well as the limitations of the integrity molding technology. As a result, the joining technique plays a key role in the application of composites [ 6 ]. Usually, fasteners are used to connect joint parts and bolted joints are frequently used in aircraft structures because they are easy to produce, disassemble, repair, and replace [ 7 ].…”
