Experimental study about the influence of adhesive stiffness to the bonding strengths of adhesives for ceramic/metal targets

Abstract: The aim of the investigations presented here was to understand how the stiffness of the adhesive affects the failure of ceramic tiles adhered to metallic backings. The working hypothesis was that varying the adhesive stiffness could have the same effect on the ballistic performance as a variation of the adhesive thickness. Two different projectile/target combinations were utilized for ballistic tests in order to generate extremely different loading conditions. With targets consisting of 6 mm aluminum oxide cer… Show more

“…Composite armour consists of a hard ceramic strike face with a ductile backing, typically a polymer or metal. Broadly, this backing layer is present for energy absorption and to limit ceramic fragmentation [3,4,5]. The interaction between the two materials strongly influences the global armour performance.…”

“…TPU and epoxy are two typical representative adhesives of thermoplastic, and thermoset adhesives, respectively. Researches [ 9 , 10 , 11 ] presented that the ceramic tiles bonded by TPU did not fall off after the impact, while the ceramic tiles bonded by epoxy all fell off. However, after the penetration of the projectile, the structure bonded with epoxy has a more significant effect on the crushing of the projectile since the epoxy has better support for ceramic than TPU.…”
