Geometrical modelings of the fabric structures are needed to understand the dimensional behavior of knitted fabrics, to be able to define the surface properties and to prepare the basic work for creating physical models. Our main aim here is to prepare basic work for creating physical models for complex knitted structures. Firstly, we wish to discuss the dimensional properties of the whole basic weft knitted structures first, and after obtaining the whole picture, we will study the physical models. Thus, any physical parameter is not discussed here.Many researchers have studied the dimensional properties of weft knitted fabrics. Among these researchers, some [5,6,9,11,18,36,41,[46][47][48]53, 60] studied the mechanical modeling of weft knitted structures, some [8,27,29,37,38,41,45,49,52] suggested geometrical models to fit the plain-knitted loop shape, and some [22,27,42,49,55,64] suggested geometrical models for 1 × 1 rib fabric. However, the models given for 1 × 1 ribs were not general models to explain the whole phenomena observed in practice.A physical model of 1 × 1 rib fabric was given by Hepworth [17], but it is too difficult to apply the model to all relaxed fabric simulations.There are studies [1, 10, 15, 19-21, 23, 51, 58, 65, 66] which have defined the weft knitted textile material behavior in technical textile applications. In these studies, mostly basic knitted structures (plain, rib, milano and interlock) were used to manufacture the technical textiles.For further analysis, for example with finite element method, there is the need for proper geometrical definition of the structures to be considered as the initial state and also to make some assumptions in creating physical models. In the first part of this study, geometrical model for the 1 × 1 rib knitted fabric is developed because this fabric is commercially very popular as classical textiles and it is also very popular for technical applications nowadays. Application of the model to conventionally knitted fabrics (fabrics knitted using conventional take down tension) is also given in part I of this series. Part II will deal with the applications of 1 × 1 rib model to the structures as interlock, half milano and presser-foot knitted 1 × 1 rib. Part III will deal with the geometrical models of 2 × 2, 3 × 3, 4 × 4 and 5 × 5 rib fabrics, in which a modified version of the present 1 × 1 rib model will be used. 1Abstract The 1 × 1 rib knitted fabric is mostly used for collar, cuff, waistband, etc. of outerwear knitted garments and it is also very popular nowadays for using as preforms of knitted composite structures. A geometrical model to predict the dimensional properties of conventionally knitted 1 × 1 rib fabric is created and given in part I of this series of papers. With the 1 × 1 rib model, relaxation mechanism and the effect of tightness on conventionally knitted 1 × 1 rib fabrics of wool are attempted to be explained (as an example of application of the model).

A knitted fabric must be pulled down during knitting in order to clear off the previously knitted loops from the needles when they are ascending. The conventional method is to place a weight, called the take-down weight, pulling the whole fabric. Alternatively, in the presser-foot system of knitting, instead of pulling the fabric from underneath, a wire pushes the last row of loops towards the previously formed loops. This wire extends only into the knitting zone; therefore, the fabric knitted by the presser-foot wire experiences no excessive tension during knitting, and is thus very close to the relaxed state.The 1 × 1 rib model described in Part I [1] of this series of papers is directly applied to presser-foot knitted 1 × 1 rib, interlock and half milano rib fabrics here in Part II. The aim of this study and the literature review on this subject were provided in Part I, and are not repeated here.Here, the model application of presser-foot knitted 1 × 1 rib wool fabrics is described below, in a similar way to the application of the model to conventionally knitted 1 × 1 rib wool fabrics given in Part I, completing the description of applications of the 1 × 1 rib model to 1 × 1 rib fabrics knitted in different knitting systems. The effect of fabric tightness on presser-foot 1 × 1 rib knitted fabrics is also discussed through the model and given in Appendix II.Furthermore, the direct application of the 1 × 1 rib model to an interlock fabric structure at a medium tightness is described. In addition, it is shown that the 1 × 1 rib fabric model given in Part I is also applicable to the rib course of half milano rib fabric. In this application two cases, namely dry relaxed and wash relaxed, are modeled. Kurbak's [2] plain knitted model is applied to the plain courses of half milano rib to complete the model of the whole structure. The models will be based on the experimentally obtained dimensional properties of the fabrics concerned; thus, a brief explanation of experimental findings are given as below. 1 ExperimentalPrevious experimental studies on the dimensional properties of 1 × 1 rib (conventionally knitted or presser-foot knitted) were described in Part I [1], therefore only brief explanations are given here. Large experimental works Abstract This paper deals with the creation of geometrical models for presser-foot knitted 1 × 1 rib, interlock and half milano rib knitted fabrics as direct applications of the 1 × 1 rib model given in Part I of this series of papers. The drawings of the models using 3DS-Max are shown and observed to be similar to the real fabrics through the photographs provided. The run-in ratio between the plain course and the rib course of half milano rib fabrics is emphasized as an important parameter for obtaining a stress-free structure, especially when using these fabrics as technical textiles.

Bu çalışmada, ring, kompakt ve open-end rotor ipliklerden farklı sıklıklarda üretilen süprem kumaşların boyutsal parametre değerleri incelenmiş ve boyutsal değişiminin tahmin edilmesi için eşitlikler oluşturulmuştur. Üretilen kumaşlar, tam relaksasyon işlemlerine tabi tutulmuş, bu işlemler sonucunda kumaşların ilmek sıklığı, çubuk sıklığı, ilmek iplik uzunluğu değerleri ölçülmüş ve boyutsal parametre değerleri hesaplanmıştır. Çalışma sonuçlarına göre; kumaşların boyutsal parametre değerlerlerinin iplik türlerine göre değişebildiği, elde edilen söz konusu değerlerin araştırmacıların belirlediği değer aralıklarına girmesinden dolayı, kumaşların 5 yıkama sonrasında tam relaksasyona uğradığı tespit edilmiştir. Hesaplanan boyutsal parametre değerlerine göre, SPSS istatistiksel programı kullanılarak kumaşların tam relaksasyon sonrasındaki ilmek ve çubuk yönündeki boyutsal değişimleri tahmin edilmiştir.
