Experimental studies of the application of the Er:YAG laser on dental hard substances: I. Measurement of the ablation rate

Abstract: Up to now lasers have not achieved any practical importance in dentistry for drilling teeth because of considerable damage to the surrounding tissue. We studied the application of pulsed 2.94 microns Er:YAG laser radiation in vitro on extracted teeth to remove enamel, dentin, and carious lesions. The depth and diameter of laser-drilled holes were measured as a function of pulse number and radiant exposure. The tissue removal is very effective both for dentin and enamel.

“…The Er:YAG was also used in this study to prepare the cavity on deep den tine, because, according to Hibst and Keller (1989), 17 the Er:YAG laser offered high ablation efficiency and low thermal side effects. Some Er:YAG laser beams could penetrate to deeper areas than the ablated area and damage the nerve fi bres and terminals, which might be a mecha nism of pain reduction in cavity ablation with the Er:YAG laser.…”

“…A seqüência da ablação em tecidos duros tem sido descrita como resultado da absorção da energia por substâncias sólidas anisotrópicas e a fase de fluidos em que se encontra o osso abaixo da superfície irradiada, que causará uma vaporização interna, aumento da pressão e remoção de material por microexplosões 2,9,12 .…”

“…1 Among all types of lasers, Erbium-Doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet laser (Er:YAG( is commonly used in dental hard tissues 2 and its ability for removing enamel and dentin is comparable to conventional methods. 1 Cavity preparation with Er:YAG laser has advantages such as removing dental hard tissues with minimal pulp injury, 3,4 creating a rough and irregular surface, 2 less side effects due to severe heat produced by conventional methods e.g. cracking, melting or charring in the remaining tissue, 3,4 lowering the pain and vibration during preparation, which increases the patient's comfort and is a key factor in pediatric dentistry.…”
