Experimental Rodent Models of Cardiovascular Diseases

Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases, as the most common non-communicable disease in the world, cause a high mortality rate today and bring a serious medical burden to countries worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Experimental rodent models are widely used for cardiovascular diseases researches due to the effective simulation of human cardiovascular diseases, strong reproductive ability, and easy detection. Herein, we will summarize the pathological manifestations of common cardiovascular diseases an… Show more

“…The increases in these mortality and morbidity rates are interpreted as a trend in developed and developing countries due to the difficulty in modifying the consolidated lifestyle habits and the several associated comorbidities that hinder the prognosis and perpetuate cardiovascular risks. From this perspective, CVDs are real burdens for health systems due to their severity, prevalence, and difficulty to treat [ 7 ].…”

“…Mice are widely used as mammalian models with four-chamber hearts in studies to understand mechanisms underlying human heart diseases [3,4]. Mice are very tractable to genetic manipulations, and most clinically diagnosed CHDs in humans can be modeled in mutant mice [5,6].…”

“…Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is a collective term for disorders of heart and blood vessels that include coronary heart disease, hypertension, and heart failure along with other heart and vascular system-related diseases such as atherosclerosis and deep venous thrombosis. CVDs are the leading cause of global mortality 1 with 17.9 million deaths each year 2 which is expected to rise to 23.6 million by 2030 3 , according to the reports of WHO four out of five CVD patients die because of heart attack or myocardial infarction every year 4 . CVD is influenced by a multitude of risk factors, prominent among these are lifestyle factors such as being overweight, having high blood sugar, increased blood pressure, smoking and unhealthy lifestyles along with genetic risk factors such as a family history of CVD that contribute to the development of CVD 5 .…”
