We propose a phenomenological extended vector meson dominance model for the baryon electromagnetic structure, and it is found that the current experimental data on the Σ and Ξ electromagnetic form factors in the time-like region can be well described. Meanwhile, we can also reproduce the ratios of the total cross sections of reactions e + e − → Σ + Σ− , Σ 0 Σ0 , and Σ − Σ+ , which are 9.7 ± 1.3 : 3.3 ± 0.7 : 1 at center-of-mass energies from 2.3864 to 3.02 GeV. We also analytically continue the expression of the form factors to spacelike region and estimate the charge radii of the Σ and Ξ hyperons. The result for the Σ − is in agreement with the experimental date.

Near-threshold Λ Λ mass spectra for the reactions e + e − → ηΛ Λ and e + e − → φΛ Λ are investigated with an emphasis on the role played by the interaction in the Λ Λ system. A variety of Λ Λ potential models is employed that have been established in the analysis of data on pp → Λ Λ in the past. It is shown that the near-threshold enhancement observed for the two e + e − reactions can be reproduced by considering the Λ Λ final-state interaction in the partial waves suggested by the helicity-angle analysis of the experiments. For e + e − → ηΛ Λ the same Λ Λ S-wave interaction as in e + e − → Λ Λ is relevant and with it a consistent description of the pertinent measurements can be achieved. It is pointed out that a nonzero threshold cross section as observed for the latter reaction is not supported by the new ηΛ Λ data.

Dispersion-theoretical analysis of the electromagnetic form factors of the $$\Lambda $$ hyperon

The electromagnetic form factors of the $$\Lambda $$ Λ hyperon in the time-like region are determined precisely through a dispersion-theoretical analysis of the world data for the cross section of the annihilation process $$e^+e^-\rightarrow {\bar{\Lambda }}{\Lambda }$$ e + e - → Λ ¯ Λ . The spectral function is represented by a superposition of narrow and broad vector meson poles. We test different scenarios for the spectral function and obtain a good description of the world data in the time-like region. The uncertainties in the extracted form factors are estimated by means of the bootstrap sampling method. The analytical continuation of the form factors to the space-like region introduces large errors due to the lack of data. When the electric $$\Lambda $$ Λ radius from chiral perturbation theory is taken as a constraint, the magnetic radius is predicted as $$r_M = 0.681 \pm 0.002$$ r M = 0.681 ± 0.002 fm. We also extract various vector meson to baryon coupling constants.
