This paper analyzes the influences of the factors in a capacitor-driven multi-stage synchronous induction coilgun (SICG) and optimal combination of the design parameters based on orthogonal experiment design (OED). Finite element transient solver is used to calculate the motion characteristics of a multi-stage SICG. The muzzle speed is set to be the target of the optimization. System parameters (factors), levels and orthogonal array (OA) are determined by the order. Three optimization schemes are compared, including stage-by-stage optimization, section optimization and full optimization. Optimal combination of the three-stage SICG is obtained, as well as important order of factors. It shows that a set of comparatively better parameters and relatively higher efficiency could be achieved through orthogonal optimum. Wire diameter and coil diameter are the most important factors that influence the system efficiency of the launcher. Besides them, length of coil, trigger position and number of turns have less influence for the system in the important order. Section optimization could reduce the amount of computations compared to full optimization and a set of comparatively better parameters and relatively higher efficiency could be achieved. It is suggested to optimize a multi-stage SICG. How to choose the factors from lots of parameters is according to the engineering practice. Improper choices of the value in levels may cause unable to reach an optimum. The conclusion will be useful for coilgun design.

Solid-state compact Marx generator using saturable pulse transformer (SPT) and fast recovery diodes has been proposed. The primary circuit is switched by three MOSFETs connected in parallel. The SPT functions as a step-up transformer to increase the voltage amplitude and as a closing switch for the secondary circuit. Meanwhile, all the SPTs share the same magnetic core to achieve a compact structure and ensure good synchronization. The energy storage capacitors on the secondary sides are charged through the unsaturated SPT. When the SPT saturates, the capacitors firstly transfer a little energy to the saturated inductors through the diodes reversely during their reverse recovery process. Currents rise quickly in these inductors until diodes totally recover to reverse blocking state. Then capacitors discharge in series to the load and high-voltage pulses are generated over the load. With the currents in the saturated inductors, the front edges of pulses are no longer affected by them but are dominated the turn-off speed of the diodes, which makes high-voltage and high-current pulses with short front edges possible. The regular and cheap fast recovery diodes in the generator act as semiconductor opening switch to sharpen the pulse front edges. Experiments were carried out with a 4-stage Marx generator prototype, 10.8-kV high-voltage pulses with a front edge of 11 ns, a pulse width of 190 ns, were obtained over a 100-Ω resistive load. The total energy efficiency is 49.8%. The proposed Marx generator using regular fast recovery diodes is compact, cheap, and efficient to generate high-voltage pulses with short front edges.

In this paper, we investigated the behavior of a type II superconducting armature when accelerated by a pulsed magnetic field generated by a single-stage pancake coil. While conducting this investigation, we performed a numerical finite element simulation and an experimental study of the magnetic field dynamics at the edge of the pancake coil when the payload was a superconducting disc made from YBa2Cu3O7−x, cooled down to 77 K. The magnetic field measurements were performed using a CMR-B-scalar sensor, which was able to measure the absolute magnitude of the magnetic field and was specifically manufactured in order to increase the sensor’s sensitivity up to 500 mT. It was obtained that type II superconducting armatures can outperform normal metals when the launch conditions are tailored to their electromagnetic properties.
