Experimental Research on Film Pressure Distribution of Water-Lubricated Rubber Bearing With Multiaxial Grooves

Abstract: In order to obtain the entire continuous circumferential film pressure distribution of a water-lubricated rubber bearing with multiaxial grooves, and further to study the bearing properties, an experimental research was conducted. The wireless measurement scheme was proposed, which can make the measurement process simple, convenient, and accurate. The unique design of the shaft and the installation methods for the pressure sensors are described. The time-domain averaging (TDA) algorithm was presented to suppre… Show more

“…In addition, the method of supporting the bearing at two points may lead to its misalignment in relation to the shaft, for instance, due to pressures appearing in the bearing's lubrication film. Similar limitations are present on most test rigs of this type which are employed in scientific research centers all over the world (Yamjo [7], Łubiński [14], Wang [17], Wang [18], and Gao [27]). …”

“…Rubber bush bearings offer numerous benefits and are currently widely used in shipbuilding, power industry and other sectors (Orndorff [1][2][3], Wang [17,18], Xijin [19], and Dong [20]). The same applies to polymer (Litwin [10][11][12], and Ginzburg [21]) and composite (Ford [6]) bush bearings.…”

“…Actually, the experimental results in Refs. [10,11] showed that the film pressure could have negative values. Therefore, the cavitation effect of water is considered in this work.…”

“…These bearings find application in Navy ships, boats, submarines, pumps and hydroelectric turbines [1][2][3][4]. Heretofore, research on water-lubricated bearings has focused primarily on the friction and wear characteristics of different bearing materials under water lubrication [5][6][7][8][9], pressure distribution in the water film [10,11] and structural design [4,[12][13][14][15]; only a few of them have addressed the stiffness and damping coefficients of these bearings. However, the stiffness and damping coefficients of bearings have significant effects on the stability of rotor systems.…”

“…Pros and cons of various types of sliding materials have been debated for years (Smith [1], Hother-Lushington [2]). Bearings presently used in shipbuilding and other industries include rubber bearings (Orndorff [3][4][5], Wang [6], Wang [7]), polymer bearings (Gao [8], Ginzburg [9]; Laskey [10]; Šverko and Šestan [11]), as well as composite bearings (Ford [12]). In addition, there are bearings made of various newly developed multi-layer materials providing custom-made properties (Yamjo [13]).…”
