Experimental–numerical study on minimizing impact induced damage in laminated composites under low-velocity impact

Abstract: In this study, an experimentally validated numerical analysis was performed toward optimization of stacking sequence in multidirectional laminated composites subjected to low velocity impact. For this purpose, an optimization program was developed by integrating Finite Element Method (FEM) and Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) using modeFRONTIER. In this regard, three objective functions were defined; one, based on Hashin failure theory and two others based on interlaminar shear and tensile stresses. Th… Show more

“…The BVID is not visible to naked eyes and sometimes difficult to detect under non-destructive inspection. These BVID severely reduce the FRP composites residual strength by growing throughout the structure with time, resulting in premature, sudden and catastrophic failure of the FRP structures (Farooq and Myler, 2015; Pashmforoush et al., 2018; Zhang et al., 2013). Furthermore, along with the BVID, the poor through-thickness strength further increases the FRP composites vulnerability (Caminero et al., 2017).…”

“…Optimum stacking sequences for laminated composites were studied by Pashmforoush et al in order to decrease the effect of failure at low‐speed impact using genetic‐algorithm‐based optimization method. Saeedifar et al considered the inter‐ and intra‐laminar damage in epoxy/carbon composites under quasi‐static indentation loading based on clustering methods.…”

“…Ćwik et al [4] believed that further research is required in deeply understanding the importance of various parameters such as wave speeds and others, as well as the experimental data is crucial in validation of the numerical models subsequently used for such parametric investigation. On similar account, an experimentally validated FEM-based numerical analysis was performed by Pashmforoush et al [16] on laminated fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites under low-velocity impact in an effort to minimize the damage. Such tensile stress-strain characterization of the advanced engineered composite materials [13] is essential in design of the members reinforced with it under quasistatic as well as dynamic loading conditions.…”
