Experimental measurement of transversal micro‐ and macro permeability during compression molding of PP/Glass composites

Abstract: In this work, a new experimental method is presented, aimed to measure the transversal permeability of fabric reinforcements for composite production. Through‐thickness impregnation of a glass woven fabric with polypropylene matrix was studied during compression molding experiments. The composite thickness was continuously measured during compression molding at different temperatures and pressure levels. The measured composite thickness was used to evaluate the molten front advancement during fabric impregnati… Show more

“…Values of permeability for inter-bundle impregnation-around the fiber bundles-are significantly higher than the values measured for intra-bundle-in between fiber bundles and around individual fibers. High values of permeability facilitate impregnation [52]. The B-factor model, developed by Mayer [53] and refined by Christmann [51], has been proposed as a means to compare the impregnation performance of processes with different parameter combinations.…”

“…For this purpose, a process model based on the so-called B-factor model was developed. The B-factor is a dimensionless constant that summarizes the process parameters pressure P, time t as well as the viscosity g and represents the impregnation performance of a process (Equation 1) [13][14][15].…”
