Experimental Investigations on Spot Welded Built-Up Cold-Formed Steel Beams

Abstract: Within the WELLFORMED research project, ongoing at the CEMSIG Research Center of the Politehnica University of Timisoara, a new technological solution was proposed for built-up beams made of corrugated steel sheets for the web and thin-walled cold-formed steel profiles for the flanges, connected by spot welding. The research project integrates an extensive experimental program on such beams, using full scale specimens, to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solutions and to assess their performance, fo… Show more

“…For example, on spot welded specimens tested experimentally [6], a good capacity and ductility was observed, but in comparison with self-drilling screws the ductility was smaller.…”

“…Sometimes profiles with larger sections and a sheet thickness of 3-5 mm are required in cases of bordering the gaps for windows or doors. Different research programs have been carried out regarding the overall behavior of cold-formed steel profile beams or their connections [6][7][8][9]. The floor system for roofs can also be made of truss beams spaced, for example, at 60 cm apart.…”

“…Cold-formed steel (CFS) profile structures may represent a solution for this new challenge of achieving a sustainable design process. There are already over 100 years of experience in using CFS [1], but intensive research has been carried out only in the last 50 years [2][3][4][5], while in the last 30 years it has begun to increase even more [6][7][8]. Some of that research focused on profile section or structural systems and others on the connection types between profiles under different type of loadings.…”

“…To avoid local buckling of the corrugations, MIG brazing connects the flange and the web on an increased length and distributes the local stress which appear in the case of discrete fasteners, leading to an increased rigidity and capacity of such beams [9] .…”
