Experimental investigations on jet impingement solar air collectors using pin-fin absorber

Abstract: In this paper, the performances of a novel jet impingement solar air collector (JISAC) using flat and pin-fin absorbers were experimentally investigated. The experimental observations in a JISAC have been made under the climatic conditions of Coimbatore city in India during the year 2019. The thermo-hydraulic analyses were conduced to study the influence of pressure drop across the perforated jet plate. The effects of solar irradiation, ambient temperature, ambient wind velocity and air mass flow rate… Show more

“…Dissipation rate for k is modified in a way to incorporate the transition from SST k-ω to LES. F DES is a parameter that facilitates the switching between k-ω and LES and it is defined in the following equation (8). C des and Δ are known as calibration constant and maximum local grid spacing, respectively.…”

“…6,7 The study demonstrates the benefits of unsteadiness and since synthetic jets are essentially unsteady, they can be more efficient in different applications. 8 Heat transfer and flow characteristics of these jets have been investigated extensively in the literature. Studies regarding the influence of Reynolds number, shape of orifice and orifice to plate distance on the heat transfer rate of synthetic jets have also been conducted.…”

“…They found that the optimum transfer of heat and hydraulic performance was obtained when the baffles are located in the first part of the air channel where the baffles compose 50% of the SAH. Kannan et al (2020) offered an experimental study on the performance jet impingement SAH utilizing pin fin absorber. The influence of solar irradiation, ambient wind velocity, ambient temperature, and air mass flow rate on the jet impingement SAH without and with pin fins was considered.…”

“…Roy and Kundu 23 theoretically modelled recto-trapezoidal flat plate solar collector and found the outcomes are considerably better when the absorber plate thickness parameter is high for recto-trapezoidal profile. Kannan et al 24 experimentally investigated the performance of a novel jet impingement solar air collector (JISAC) using flat and pin-fin absorbers and showed that the pin-fin absorber has 2-7 C higher air temperature at the outlet with 3-7%, 2-6% and 2-6% better energy efficiency, thermo-hydraulic efficiency and exergy efficiency respectively when compared to the JISAC using flat absorber.…”
