Experimental investigations of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a doped solid

Abstract: We report on experimental investigations of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage ͑STIRAP͒ in a Pr 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 crystal. STIRAP drives complete, coherent population transfer between two hyperfine levels in the Pr 3+ ions. We investigate the variation of the STIRAP transfer efficiency with the experimental parameters: e.g., detunings, Rabi frequencies, and pulse delays. In addition, we also observe an alternative and efficient, adiabatic transfer process-i.e., b-STIRAP-which occurs for a reversed sequence of lase… Show more

“…It is now well understood that electromagnetically induced transparency and related quantum interference effects can be observed in rare-earth ions using their hyperfine structure [42][43][44]. With the ions optically pumped to a specific hyperfine level, appropriately tuned probe and coupling laser beams can be used to form a Λ scheme.…”

“…This mechanism is similar to the so called b-STIRAP process, [4], [14], [15]. The condition (20), however, might be questionable for atomic beams, because of the constraint on the radiative lifetime.…”

“…Another, alternative, technique of population transfer has been experimentally demonstrated in works [20,21]. The technique is based on intuitive sequence of pulses when the pump pulse is turned on prior to the Stokes pulse.…”

“…The scheme we propose is based on the cyclic adiabatic population transfer by the STIRAP and b-STIRAP methods which are sufficiently well studied both theoretically [15][16][17] and experimentally [18][19][20][21] not only on individual atoms [22,23], but also in media ISSN 1068-3372, Journal of Contemporary Physics (Armenian Academy of Sciences), 2012, Vol. 47, No.…”
