Experimental investigations of ice slurry flow based on monoethylene glycol at high ice fractions

Abstract: Ice slurry has so many advantages as phase-change slurries due to the high latent heat of its particles. Ice slurry is one of a competitive alternative to conventional secondary refrigeration systems that have been successfully employed in many applications. In this research, ice slurry flow with monoethylene glycol (MEG) at high ice fractions was investigated. The experiment was carried out by measuring shear stress and flow rate as variable to calculate power law index. The experiment was performed in 14 mm,… Show more

“…On the other hand, several ice slurry research pioneers have reported the variation of pressure drop as a function of ice fraction, flow velocity, flow direction (upward, downward, and horizontal), additives at different initial concentrations, and particle diameters based on experimental data. ,, Additionally, extensive experiments have measured the pressure drops of ice slurry flows in typical components of pipeline systems including a T-junction, , pipe tees, flow dividers, a helically coiled pipe, pipe sudden contractions, pipe sudden expansions, pumps, and valves Figure a and b presents the pressure drops across a heat exchanger (with an equivalent hydraulic diameter of 24 mm) measured in experiments where ice slurries with various ice fractions flow at different speeds .…”

“…Yanuar et al 14) revealed the influence of pipe wall geometry where they combined the active and passive control methods using surfactant in a spiral pipe. In their research of using spiral pipes to transport fluids, drag reduction is influenced not only by a mixture of drag-reducing agents but also by the wall of the pipe 15) . Their other study related the piping systems emphasised the conjunction of the impact on environmental losses and energy efficiency 16) .…”

“…On the other hand, both influences of pipe wall geometry and surfactant revealed by Yanuar combined the active and passive control methods (Yanuar et al, 2012;Yanuar et al, 2015). In their study, drag reduction was not influenced only by a mixture of drag-reducing agents but also by the wall of pipe geometry.…”

“…Several previous studies related to piping systems have been carried out in conjunction with the impact on environmental losses and energy efficiency (Senapati et al, 2013;Yanuar et al, 2018). The particle-laden fluid flow transport characteristics of solid water mixtures in piping systems need to be thoroughly understood so that it can be used to solve piping application problems.…”
