Over time, atmospheric ducts have been studied in a bid to understand and harness for optimal tropospheric propagation of radio waves. The most useful quantity in the study of ducts is the modified refractivity. The gradient of modified refractivity is used in the classification of anomalous propagation conditions. This study characterizes modified refractivity across arid regions of Nigeria, using meteorological data obtained from the European Centre for Medium – Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Re-analysis 5 (ERA-5. It takes a bit - by - bit look at the variables that form radio signal trapping from the very fundamental temperature and relative humidity to the modified refractivity gradient which describes the radio signal trapping characteristics. The study location of relevance is the arid region of Nigeria, and five locations are randomly selected. The analyses of results show a high occurrence of ducts through diurnal and seasonal variations in the arid region. These results are in agreement with the physics of the meteorological parameters in which modified refractivity is dependent upon.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of paddy rice ploughing techniques on water use and the yield of rice crop, as well as water use efficiency for rice growing in small-holder irrigation schemes. The study was conducted at a farmer’s field in Powo B sub-block of Maugo Irrigation Scheme. The period of study was from July 2019 to January 2020, which is the rice season. The experimental site was located in the vicinity of Olare Shopping Centre, Kamenya Sub-location, Kochia East Location, Kochia Ward, Rangwe Sub-County, Homa Bay County, Nyanza Region, Kenya in Maugo rice scheme in Kenya. In the study, four irrigation tillage practices were applied: ox-plough, conventional ox-plough, hand hoe and tractor ploughing. The results showed that conventional ox-ploughing consumed the highest amount of water at 1240 mm. The highest water use efficiency of 0.49 kg/m3 and highest yield of 5.7 tons/ha were observed for hand hoe ploughing. Use of the hand hoe ploughing technique increased yields by 20 percent, as compared to the conventional ox-ploughing. Therefore, the use of water for ploughing is not necessary in the study area. Future research will be needed to see how farmers are adopting the technology before scaling up to full mechanization, as partial mechanization was not profitable.

The current SARS-COVID-19 crisis has demonstrated the dangers that airborne virus (AV) pandemics pose to the health of all workers (particularly in the meat processing industry), the economic health of the food industry, and food security. The impact that the current pandemic has had on the food industry points to the need for a proactive rather than reactive approach towards preventing future AV outbreaks. Such a proactive approach should be based on empirical assessments of current AV food safety practices and the development of more robust practices tailored to the culture and needs of the food industry. Moreover, a proactive approach is necessary in order to better prepare the food industry for future AV outbreaks, protect the health of workers, reduce disparities in AV occupational health risks, and enhance the safety of the food supply chain. The aim of this review is to make the case for a new food safety research paradigm that incorporates the intensive study of airborne viruses under conditions that simulate food industry work environments.
