Water is a vital component of human survival. Drinking water is scarce in several large provinces around the world. Only saline water, which may be demineralised and utilised for drinking, is available in this situation. For extended journeys, normal water is required in boats and submarines. Self–demineralised equipment is usually installed in vehicles, but it consumes more conventional gasoline and is, therefore, more expensive. To address this problem, solar still can be used, which has the primary aim of converting seawater into consumable desalinated water. In this work, a solar still with phase change material (PCM) – RT58 which have better thermo-physical properties has been incorporated and investigated for thermo-economic performance. It is observed from the results that the RT-58 PCM achieved a greater yield compared to conventional solar still (CSS) without any PCM as an energy storage material. The productivity of solar still with PCM is increased by 46% relative to CSS. Also, the economic analysis revealed that the solar still with PCM is more economically viable than CSS in terms of cost per litre production of freshwater and payback period.

The objective of the work is to investigate the single slope solar still for the enhancement in productivity by the inclusion of optimum weight of palm flower powder of micro-sized in the absorber basin and optimum weight% of micro-Phase Change Material (mPCM) under the absorber basin. In this regard, the effect of different weights of palm flower powder such as 10, 30, 45, 50, 55, 70, 100, 120 and 150 g in the absorber was analysed. The solar still with 50 g of palm flower powder in the absorber increased the productivity by 37.25% whereas, for 10, 30, 45, 55, 70, 100, 120 and 150 g were 11.85, 24.78, 36.1, 36.8, 34.35, 33.05, 10.25 and -20.22% respectively. The effect of different weight% of micro-sized palm flower powder such as 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt%, in paraffin wax, was investigated. The paraffin wax with 20 wt% of micro-sized palm flower powder has a better thermal conductivity of 0.33 W/mK. The experimentation was carried out with 50 g of micro-sized palm flower powder in the absorber basin and 20 wt% mPCM under the absorber basin solar still (PCMPFP-SS) and Conventional Solar Still (CSS). The overall yield of PCMPFP-SS was 4670 ml/m2-day on day 1 and 4250 ml/m2-day on day 2, for CSS it was 3030 ml/m2-day on day 1 and 2800 ml/m2-day on day 2. It was evaluated that the Cost per Litre of PCMPFP-SS was $ 0.025 and $ 0.032 for CSS.

The accessibility of pure drinking water is one of the most complex challenges that humankind experiencing around the world. In this study, the experimental investigation has been carried out in the single slope solar still by the incorporation of naturally available Eucheuma fiber in the absorber basin. The Eucheuma fiber has high water absorbing capacity and acts like a wick material. The experimental results on two consecutive days in the month of February 2021 shows that the solar still with agar-agar fiber (SSAAF) has an increase in productivity of 22.06% on Day 1 and 21.05% on Day 2 in comparison with conventional solar still (CSS). The freshwater productivity of SSAAF was 3150 ml/ m 2 /day on Day 1 and 3800 ml/m 2 /day on Day 2, whereas for CSS it was 2600 and 3100 ml/m 2 /day on Day 1 and Day 2, respectively. The thermal efficiency was increased by 10% and 13% on Day 1 and 2 for SSAAF. The economic analysis indicates that SSAAF has a payback period of 4.3 months whereas CSS has 5.
