Experimental investigation on lateral performance of pre-stressed tube bolted connection with high initial stiffness

Abstract: This article presents an experimental study on the moment-resisting capacity and stiffness of the proposed pre-stressed tube bolted connection. High-strength bolts with tubes were used as fasteners in such connections. A series of monotonic and reversed cyclic loading tests were conducted with T-shaped glulam beam-to-column connections. The strength, stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation property of the pre-stressed tube bolted connections were obtained and compared with traditional bolted connections. … Show more

“…[ 18,19 ] The second approach is to use various kinds of components to strengthen the connection at the structural level, which aims at increasing the rotational stiffness of the connection. Some of the existing solutions have applied the hollow variable‐wall‐thickness bolts, [ 20 ] the hollow steel dowels with injected epoxy resin, [ 21 ] steel dowels with expanded tube fasteners, [ 22 ] the plain round rods, [ 12 ] the self‐drilling dowels, [ 14 ] the pre‐stressed tubes, [ 23 ] the knee braces, [ 24 ] the steel angles, [ 25 ] and the friction dampers [ 26 ] to the bolted connections.…”

“…In addition, Song et al (2016) found that using the carbon fibre-reinforced polymer sheets increased the moment resisting capacity of the reinforced connections by 59% when compared with unreinforced connections. In addition, He et al (2016) proposed a bolt connector with pre-stressed tubes and high-strength bolts. The existence of friction due to the pre-stressed tube was found to increase the initial rotational stiffness of the joint.…”

“…At present, there is no standard for bamboo structures. Referring to timber structural standards, which are generally similar to those for bamboo structures, the conventional connection modes can be divided into bolt connections (He et al, 2016), nail connections and truss plate connections (GB 50005-2017(GB 50005- , 2017. Compared with other connection modes, nail connections are the most basic connection for light bamboo and timber structures.…”
