SUMMARY Appropriate monitoring and maintenance become important as an oil‐immersed transformer ages. Generally, dissolved gas analysis (DGA) is effective for the online diagnosis, and if an abnormality is detected, frequency response analysis (FRA) is effective for the offline diagnosis to localize the failed part. FRA diagnosis detects a slight change of waveforms; however, external factors may influence the results. Here, we discuss the influence of an insulating oil presence, tap position, and measurement lead wire length as possible parameters that influence the FRA characteristics. We confirmed that the measurement parameters examined here greatly influenced the FRA characteristics. In the actual diagnosis, it is important to remove these external parameters as much as possible, and keep a detailed record of the measurement parameters. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A circuit model of a real transformer is established to reproduce the transfer functions of the transformer. This model is based on the configuration and dimensions of the real transformer. Using this circuit model, the sensitivities of the circuit elements to the resonant frequencies are analyzed. In frequency response analysis (FRA), this sensitivity analysis is helpful in the diagnosis of abnormalities by extracting the circuit elements having relatively high sensitivity to the shift of the resonant frequency. Furthermore, the ability to detect abnormalities in a transformer winding is discussed quantitatively by relating the shift of the resonant frequency and the degree of abnormality via variations of circuit elements on the basis of electromagnetic theory. The accumulation of such data for transformers with different classes of rated voltage and capacity, connections of phases, winding configurations, and so will contribute construction of diagnosis criteria for transformer windings by FRA.

With the increasing average use years of transformers there is an increasing need to know the transformer condition. Therefore, appropriate monitoring and maintenance become important as the oil-immersed transformer ages. Generally DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis) is effective for the on-line diagnosis, and if abnormality is detected, FRA (Frequency Response Analysis) is effective for the off-line diagnosis to localize the failed part. FRA is one of the diagnostic technology of a transformer. The crucial advantage of FRA method is obviously given the diagnosis results through bypassing the costly inspection of the untanked transformer after the occurring failures.FRA measurements aim to diagnose damage to windings or cores of transformers from the outside by detecting a few differences in the waveforms that show frequency response characteristics. Should these differences be affected by external factors, fault diagnosis could not be performed with accuracy. FRA diagnosis detects the slight change of waveforms, where external factors may influence the results. Here, we discuss the influence factors on FRA waveforms.
