Experimental Investigation on Fiber Laser Cutting of Ti6Al4V Thin Sheet

Abstract: The high strength to weight ratio and good corrosion resistance of titanium alloys, have led to an increasing use of these materials, particularly in the aerospace industry. The laser cutting technique may be a promising tool in machining titanium alloy parts like those with subsequent welding requirement: in this case, surface quality of the kerf edges is of great importance. The low thermal conductivity and the high chemical activity of titanium alloys lead, in fact, to alterations of the surface properties … Show more

“…Most papers in literature report results concerning cutting of pure Ti and its alloys using CO 2 laser [35] and Nd:YAG lasers operating in PM [36][37][38][39]. Recently, experimental results on CW fiber laser beam cutting of Ti6Al4V alloy thin sheets were reported for the first time [40].…”

“…Argon gas was used as a cutting medium. 1 mm thick sheets were cut, and the altered properties of the cut zone were investigated [102]. Once laser processing was conducted on Ti 6 Al 4 V, torsional tests were conducted on samples of different porosities to test the deformation and mechanical behavior of the samples [34].…”

“…The kerf widths with nitrogen assisted gas were generally wider. Scintilla et al [6] presented results of Ytterbium fiber laser cutting of Ti6Al4V sheets (1mm thick) performed with Argon as cutting assistance gas. The effect of cutting speed and shear gas pressure on the HAZ thickness, squareness, roughness and dross attachment was investigated.…”
