Experimental investigation of vector static magnetic field detection using an NV center with a single first-shell 13 C nuclear spin in diamond

Abstract: We perform a proof-of-principle experiment that uses a single negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center with a nearest neighbor 13 C nuclear spin in diamond to detect the strength and direction (including both polar and azimuth angles) of a static vector magnetic field by optical detection magnetic resonance (ODMR) technique. With the known hyperfine coupling tensor between an NV center and a nearest neighbor 13 C nuclear spin, we show that the information of static vector magnetic field could be e… Show more

“…It should be noted that in our experiment only three of the four NV axes are used for reconstruction of 𝐵 and the real direction of the detected field in the laboratory frame could not be determined due to the lack of a calibration of the magnetic field. With a method akin to maximum likelihood estimation, [26,32] our numerical calculations implemented a search procedure to match the target experimental resonance frequencies ν 1,2 , ν 3,4 , and ν 5,6 according to the formula…”

“…[10] To reconstruct the complete information of a static vector magnetic field 𝐵, the azimuth angle should be determined simultaneously. Various methods have been developed to address this issue, including the high-spin system theoretically, [25] the NV center with a single nearest neighbor 13 C system, [26,27] and the techniques of ensemble imaging. [28,29] In our work, we demonstrated a proof-of-principle experiment to reconstruct a static vector magnetic field by three NV sensing spin centers with different crystal axes.…”

“…Recently, the electron spin resonance (ESR) technique based on the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV − ) center is expected to play a key role in detecting the diamagnetism signals of superconducting samples in a DAC. [12][13][14] The NV − center is a point defect comprising a substitutional nitrogen atom and an adjacent crystallographic vacancy and has degenerate triplet electronic ground state 3 A 2 (m s = 0 and m s = ±1). [15,16] When electrons are de-excited from excited state 3 E to the ground state, photons with energy 1.945 eV and fluorescence wavelength 637 nm are radiated.…”
