Experimental investigation of the reaction12C(?, ?0)X in the photon energy range between threshold and 450 MeV

Abstract: The photoproduction of neutral pions on 12C has been investigated between threshold and 450MeV photon energy using the tagged photon beam at the Bonn 500MeV synchrotron and a large acceptance detector. The rc ~ detector consists of cylindrical wire chambers covering a solid angle of nearly 4m Using a scintillation counter as an active 12C target an attempt was made to separate coherent and incoherent n ~ photoproduction. The measured total and differential cross sections are compared to corresponding theoretic… Show more

“…The coherent cross section involves the square of the product of the mass number and the nuclear form factor times the square of the spinisospin averaged amplitude. The coherent and incoherent cross sections can in principle be separated experimentally, as done in the case of pions around the delta energy region [33]. However, this might be difficult at higher energies where one usually has a poorer energy resolution.…”

“…For further comparison with experimental data we have calculated the coherent cross section from 12 C at photon energies of E γ = 235, 250, and 291 MeV. In Table I we have collated our calculations with experimental data published by J. Arends and collaborators [18] for E γ = 235 and 291 MeV, and with data presented by Booth [19] and A. Nagl, V. Devanathan, and H. Überall [14] for E γlab = 250 MeV. The experimental data exhibits similar patterns as our calculations (not shown) but the values of the maxima of the cross section are different.…”

“…The curves are calculations from [21]. The triangles for 12 C are from a previous measurement with less stringent suppression of the incoherent components [22].…”
