“…The shapes of the gas interface in previous studies mainly include the single-mode interface (Meshkov 1969;Brouillette 2002;Jacobs & Krivets 2005;Mariani et al 2008;Long et al 2009;Balakumar et al 2012;, the spherical or cylindrical bubble formed by a soap film (Haas & Sturtevant 1987;Hosseini & Takayama 2005;Layes, Jourdan & Houas 2009;Haehn et al 2011Haehn et al , 2012Zhai et al 2011;Si et al 2012), the membrane-less gas cylinder (Jacobs 1992(Jacobs , 1993Tomkins et al 2008;Zhai et al 2014;Zou et al 2010) or gas curtain Orlicz et al 2009;Balakumar et al 2012;Balasubramanian et al 2012;Tomkins et al 2013) formed by the jet technique and the inclined planar interface (Wang et al 2012;McFarland et al 2014). Besides these classical interface shapes, Mikaelian (2005) theoretically and numerically studied the RMI on an initial interface with a discontinuous change in its first derivative.…”

“…2,[30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37] Many models, providing a comprehensive description of the evolution of a single-mode RM instability for the single-shock case exist in the open literature. The most updated study was presented in Dimonte et al, 28 along with a detailed review of existing models, and this case is well understood.…”

“…101 Unfortunately, the pieces of the membrane and the support could have adverse effects on the flow evolution. Recently, a series of studies on the RM instability of an inclined interface have been performed by McFarland et al [102][103][104][105][106][107] using numerical, theoretical and experimental methods. The effects of the initial shock strength, gas pair, angle of inclination and re-shock on the interface evolution were highlighted.…”

“…The first known detailed experiments on the RM instability of an inclined interface were conducted using Mie scattering and PIV. 105 However, the baroclinic vorticity deposition and resulted perturbation growth were affected by smaller density gradient because of the gas diffusion. In order to generate a discontinuous inclined interface without supports, a soap film technique was extended by Luo et al 97,108 to form a 'V' shaped interface which is equivalent to an inclined interface with perfectly reflecting side walls.…”
