Experimental Investigation of Surface Plasmon Resonance Using Tapered Cylindrical Light Guides with Metal-Dielectric Interface

Abstract: In this paper we report an experimental investigation on the observation of surface plasmon resonance at the metal- dielectric interface of silver coated tapered light guiding glass rods of different dimensions. Chemical deposition technique has been used for metallic deposition of silver on the Tapered glass rod. Angular interrogation in Kretschmann- like configuration of this non-planar (cylindrical) structure is used to locate the resonance dip in the reflectance mea- surement. Fabrication simplicity, in ad… Show more

“…Surface plasmon resonance has lots of applications in chemical and biological sensing [5,6] as a small change in optical properties of the dielectric sensing medium adjacent to the metal layer can be measured with high precision [7][8][9]. Previously both theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out in the field of SPR-sensors [10][11][12][13][14][15].…”

“…3 A theoretical investigation of sensitivity in comparison of prism and grating coupler based SPR sensors in angular and wavelength interrogation modes has been reported by Homola et al 4 SPR sensors that are made from silica glass restrict the operation of the sensor within the visible range. 13 Admittance loci method has been used in thin film modeling 14 and the design of SPRbased devices. Surface plasmon excitation in the infrared region involves the use of chalcogenide 5 and silicon as coupling prism materials.…”
